Miss Glamour has kept to its true excellence of standard, and proved to be rising in popularity once more. One of the most waited nights in Gibraltar’s social calendar lived up to all expectations, as the contestants took to the stage with their impressive opening routine on Friday 11th July at the Alameda Open Air Theatre.

Shyanne Azzopardi Miss Glamour, Karess Zammit 1st Princess,Claire Nuñez 2nd Princess and Miss Personality.
In a spectacular conclusion to the beauty pageant, with all the glamour and glitz and with amazing choreography and directed by Bianca Chiara, the 6th annual Miss Glamour 2008 drew to a finale. Shyanne Azzopardi (17) walked away with the coveted title, Miss Friendship, Miss Best Effort, Miss Vogue, Miss Elegant and her passport to the annual Miss Mediterranean being held in cruise around the Mediterranean, later this year.

Karess Zammit was elected as 1st Princess and also took the award of Miss Bikini, Miss Catwalk and Best Hair. Claire Nuñez came away with the prize of 2nd Princess and Miss Personality.

Miss Cover Girl went to the lovely Stacey Britto and Best Skin and Best Smile, second year in a row to Maroua Kharbouch.

It seems like only yesterday when they staged the first ever Miss Glamour at the Catholic Community Centre. Now, six years later they were back at the Alameda Open Air Theatre, bigger and better.

The Alameda Open Air Theatre was packed to capacity for their 2007 production and without hesitation they managed to book a full house again for this year’s event.

Eight weeks of preparation paid off as the contestants went through an extraordinary dance routine with great ease in front of an anticipated audience, followed by their presentation. They introduced themselves by contestant number, name, age and their sponsor. In this part of the routine you could see in each individual girl their self-confidence, self-esteem, character and personality shining through. This year we saw a large turnout once again of egger young ladies entering the competition. A total of 10 beauties between the ages of 14 to 17 opened the show with excellent choreography to the distinguished panel of judges who were Miss Gibraltar 1986 Dominique Martinez, Miss Gibraltar 1990 Sarah Yeats, lead singer of Gibraltar’s very popular group Taxi, Dylan Ferrar, Professional Photographer and Graphic Designer Stephen Perera and Professional Hair Dresser Yolanda Jimenez.

Compare for the evening was the talented and experienced Andy Coumbe who welcomed the girls and the audience to the show at the end of the grand opening. It is obvious why he is recognised as one of the most enjoyable presenters to watch on the rock. He definitely proved his worth on the night. Well done Andy.

When the girls came out next it was in their swimsuit routine. The beautiful young ladies came out in black swimsuits and accessorised with a black bower feathers and stunning jewellery from Pashmina. They all looked remarkable and walked with absolute poise in their black high heels.

Next we saw the contestants in Miss Vogue routine. This gave the contestants the opportunity to create their own outfits and show their personality.

The first half of the show ended with all of the contestants modelling denim-jean trousers with casual tops donated by Glamour Creations. The girls showed a great deal of confidence and posture in this routine and had to prove to the judges that they had what it takes to be a teen beauty queen on the catwalk competition.

At the start of the second half of the show we saw the contestants in lovely coordinated red, green and purple summer dresses with black accessories, once again donated by Glamour Creations.

The final outfits that the girls came out in were the evening wear competition that was very smooth running. We saw all 10 young ladies with their unique dresses. This was the last time that we saw the contestants before the final results.

And finally it was the moment that everyone had been waiting for. As everyone knows there could only be one winner and for that lucky young lady her dreams came to reality after all her hard work and effort. Miss Glamour 2008 was won by Miss Shyanne Azzopardi.

Now she will be the face of Miss Glamour for 2008/2009, she will have to work together with local charities and no doubt start her preparations for Miss Mediterranean, to be held in a cruise (all expenses paid) around the Mediterranean this coming October.

Once again, the winners received a vast amount of prizes both cash and gifts. The vast amount of prizes on offer every year (thanks to Bianca Chiara and her team working throughout the year, bringing on board many local businesses) seem to be one of the main encouragements for the girls to enter. It was commented in the show this year that the amount of prizes in the Miss Glamour far surpasses the prizes given in any other local pageant, including Miss Gibraltar. Miss Glamour took a total of no less than 26 prizes home with her. This is without including the main prize of an all expenses paid cruise in the Mediterranean for 8 days, and to compete on board in an internationally recognised pageant, representing Gibraltar. The 1st princess took a total of 13 prizes home, and the 2nd Princess took a total of 11 prizes home.

The advantage of entering one of Glamour Creations beauty pageants, can also lead onto greater things for the winners, such as family holidays, prize money, modelling contracts, along with interesting and fun duties such as personal appearances for charitable causes.

Entertainment for the evening saw some excellent dances by Tarik Dance School, who demonstrated some of the recent dance routines that won them several prizes for Gibraltar in the international dance competition held in Prague, Check Republic. We were also privileged to view the very glamorous fashion show by Serene Beauty designed by Bianca Yeo and Helen Gustafson, showing off their lingerie collection.

In the evening wear parade Bianca came up with the ingenious idea of taking on the services of the very talented Jonathan Sacramento. It has to be mentioned that Jonathan accompanied by his acoustic guitar, performed some excellent background music for this part of the show. Once the judges disappeared to deliberate and once Andy Coumbe finished with the ever popular raffle (It’s not only the girls that walk away with prizes at Miss Glamour), local band The Spoons, took to the stage and performed a medley of their compilations.

Prior to the prizes being handed out Andy Coumbe called on stage Bianca Chiara, who was received with great applause and even some cheers. The contestants expressed their gratitude for the support given by the organisation and they presented Bianca with a gift voucher for a full body massage. After all her hard work I believe she will truly enjoy the massage.

Miss Glamour beauty pageant now in its sixth year, is aimed for young ladies between the age of 14 to 17 (next year between the ages of 15 to 18) as a stepping stone of encouragement to lead them to the many pageants that is held all over the world but first and foremost the Miss Gibraltar beauty pageant. The girls of which the majority have never been on a catwalk or been in the public eye are fully trained in an intensive 8 week program by Gibraltar’s most experienced model and pageant organiser, Bianca Chiara.

Talking to the Director / Producer Bianca Chiara a couple of days after the event she said, “I started Glamour Creations in 2003. I want my pageants to be a Positive Learning Experience for contestants to learn the meaning of competition, positive self confidence, striving to be the very best and also teaching the essential lesson of enjoying the fun of participating even if one does not always win. They are a great and fun way for many people of various ages and all types of backgrounds to meet and make new friends. A pageant system can only be as good as its contestants and Glamour Creations has become “A Top of The Line” pageant. We always intend to project to our audience, good energy and good feelings, and above all a fully entertaining, value for money evening.

The focus for this program is to provide an opportunity for young women to better themselves. Each year we work to provide a fair environment in which they have the opportunity to compete not against others, but against themselves. We trust the pageant encourages the contestants to build self-confidence, individual pride, and a greater self-awareness.

Each contestant should be able to improve their ability to communicate effectively, and to speak in front of people comfortably. We encourage our contestants to find causes or issues they feel strongly about, and to become involved in those organisations that speak closest to their hearts. Each young lady who enters has different ideals and goals and strives hard in their personal quest for excellence.

We are pleased that a majority of contestants each year have never participated in a pageant and they find it to be a rewarding and worthwhile experience. Many contestants have won their first time out, and many others return because of the positive experience they had in our program. We like to think that each young woman walks away from our program a little more ready to deal with the world around her, and more importantly, the world ahead of her.

There is more going on behind the scenes than what meets the eye. There are many individuals and companies involved in the production of Miss Glamour. We have individuals involved with the music, lights, make-up, hair, back-stage, entertainment, etc. We also have our charitable sponsors who help out every year with the final creation. Without their help we would not be able to produce the shows.

The organisers on a personal note would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate all 10 gorgeous contestants for their wonderful performance and congratulate the winners for their success. Well Done.

“I would like to thank all the parents, family members and friends who supported this year’s Miss Glamour contestants with encouragements, praise and applause. I will continue to keep my commitment to the pageants and maintain a well-organised, professional, fair and fun filled contest for all to enjoy. Hope to see you all at the next event.” Apart from giving a big thank you to all my back stage crew, who are too many to mention by name, but they know who they are, I would like to give a special thank you this year to my partner, Bryan Zammit, my sister Monique Perera, and someone who over the last 3 months has become a good friend and support to me Inger Hurtado. Without the help of everyone involved including the continued support from our local business community. Miss Glamour would never have become what it has”.
