Will the real Miss Swindon stand up?

IT MIGHT be the ultimate title for any girl in the town, but three beauty queens are claiming the crown for Miss Swindon 2010.
Rebecca Cole, Hannah Golding and Emma-Jayne Salter all won the prestigious title at separate beauty pageants this year, causing some confusion as to who should take the crown.
Between the three of them, they have won the Swindon titles for Miss Great Britain, Miss Galaxy UK and Miss England competitions respectively, but the girls said yesterday that there was no rivalry between them.
Rebecca Cole, 25, of Stratton, is Miss Swindon for the Miss Great Britain competition in December, but has also starred in the other two contests.
She said: “It’s the same really, all the Miss Swindons are in the same place. If they got to the finals then they are in the same position.
“The girls in their own mind were crowned Miss Swindon.”
Rebecca was Miss Swindon for the Miss England competition in 2008 and was Miss Swindon Galaxy for Miss Galaxy UK in 2009.
“It’s nice for me to say I’ve been it three years running,” she said.
She will compete against 60 girls from across the UK at the Miss Great Britain competition in Weston-super-Mare at the beginning of December.
“For me this is the one to win because obviously Great Britain is bigger than just England. This competition gets covered a lot more by Hello and OK magazine,” she said.
Hannah Golding, 21, of Liden, won the Miss Swindon Galaxy title in July and will compete in the Miss Galaxy UK competition in February.
“We have our title from our own competitions. It’s a good thing because it helps you make more friends. It’s good to share the title as we can work together and it benefits the whole town,” she said.
“Emma and I are planning on doing a couple of events together. I have never met Rebecca but she seems like a really nice girl,” she said.
Emma Jayne-Salter represented Swindon in the Miss England competition this year.
Miss England director, Angie Beasley, said: “Our competition is linked with Miss World so I would like to think ours is the real Miss Swindon.”
Rhona Shafik, Miss England heats organiser, said: “Anybody can set up a Miss Swindon and you could argue that the title is equally valid. However, Miss England goes directly to Miss World and none of the other competitions do.
A spokeswoman for Miss Great Britain said: “Miss Great Britain is the oldest national beauty pageant.
“It celebrated its 65th anniversary this year. The other two are much more recent.”
A spokesman for Miss Galaxy UK said: “We believe it to be fantastic that three girls from Swindon have the opportunity to represent their town in competitions like Miss Galaxy.
“Hannah is a superb Miss Swindon Galaxy and has undertaken many events within her community, which have included modelling for Swindon based fashion companies, supporting Swindon Wildcats and dropping the puck at their first game and volunteering regularly for Cancer Research.
“All beauty competitions have different goals and aims.
“With Miss Galaxy, we find that our finalists gain confidence and poise over their year as titleholders.
“The pageant affords each delegate the opportunity to grow and advance their personal and career goals, whilst acting as a role model in their community.”
