County Durham teenager is queen of pagents

THIS North teenager jetted to America and beat its beauty queens at their own game.
Sophie Watson became the star of a series of pageants in the US last month.
The 13-year-old, from Spennymoor, County Durham, is also the reigning Mini Miss UK 2009, one of 20 major titles she now holds.
She flew to Texas to compete in the Universal Royalty National Pageant, the biggest of its kind in America.
And the budding musician, who dreams of becoming a top theatre star in London’s West End, stole the show to clinch a winner’s medal in her section.
Sophie, a pupil at the town’s Tudhoe Grange Comprehensive School, was followed by a BBC film crew in the state capital Austin for a documentary on beauty pageants.
“I loved every minute of it,” she said. “It’s always nerve-wracking when you get up on stage but it was amazing.
“It was a brilliant experience and I want to go back next year. I’m proud of myself because the American girls were much more polished because they have been doing pageants since they were really small.”
Closer to home, Sophie holds the Miss Teen Great Britain International Tourism 2010 and Miss Teen County Durham Galaxy 2010.
Her proud mum Joy said: “A few years ago she had low self-confidence but she has blossomed with all these activities.
“She’s now a really out-going girl and she has friends all over the world.
“I think she’s an inspiration. She’s different to me. I couldn’t have been so confident when I was Sophie’s age.”
Junior beauty pageants are big business and have caused controversy in the US, with many critics claiming children are being forced to grow up too fast.
But Joy says the image most people have of pageants is a myth.
“I really don’t have a problem with pageants,” she said. “It’s easy for people to judge but they should see for themselves and then form an opinion.
“Having been there and seen how pageants are run its obvious that the children really enjoy themselves and make great friends.”
Last year Britain held its first one when than 2,000 pre-teens applied to compete in Mini Miss UK. On winning the title, Sophie said: “I never expected to win. When they said my name I just couldn’t believe it. I felt like a princess.
“I really want to be on the West End stage - I do ballet, tap, theatre and singing.”
And her next big break could be on TV show Britain’s Got Talent.
Sophie said: “I’m going to audition for the next series and I really hope it could help me to get on the West End stage.”
