It was 24 years ago in Wasilla, Alaska that a bright, driven, young woman walked into Diane Osborne's salon and asked for sponsorship in an upcoming beauty pageant.
Little did Osborne know young beauty queen Sarah Heath would one day be future vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin.
"We started with general maintenance. We cut her hair and went through some different hair styles. We worked with her make-up," Osborne said.
Osborne, who gave up cutting hair years ago, has owned The Flower Petal'er on Clark Avenue in Yuba City for the past six years.
It wasn't until recently that Osborne thought of Sarah Heath. She was watching Palin's acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention when, all of a sudden, something clicked.
"I told my husband, 'I know her!' He said, 'No you don't.' I said, 'Yes, I do!' Then they referred to her as Sarah Heath and I said, 'That's Sarah'," Osborne said.
Osborne then looked through some old pictures and found several of the two of them together. "To see how far she's come from the little town of Wasilla excites me. She's put Wasilla on the map," Osborne said.
Osborne grew close to Palin while sponsoring her through several beauty pageants, including Miss Wasilla and the Miss Alaska competition. Even then, Osborne said, Sarah was sweet yet driven and very easy to work with.
"She was in the pageants to get the scholarship money. That's why she was entering them. So I admired her then and I am happy for her," Osborne said.
Osborne said she and her husband were already planning to vote Republican in November -- and her unexpected connection just solidifies her decision.
"I felt very close to her at the time. You forget about people and when her name came up again, I thought, wow, how cool," Osborne said.
