American Heritage safety/running back Daniel Roundtree has a different family background than most, one that usually inspires a few laughs among his friends.
His sister, Danielle, a graduate of Dillard, is a beauty queen.
''I get it from everybody,'' Roundtree said. ''It's funny to me. It's my sister. I know she don't see most people like that. It's nothing that bothers me. That's actually a compliment. I'd rather them say, `Oh, your sister is pretty'' than, 'Oh, your sister is ugly.' ''
Danielle won the 2008 Miss New York pageant and competed in the Miss USA pageant.
''She's been doing beauty pageants since she was younger,'' Roundtree said. ``She started when she was 12. She moved to New York for college two or three years ago. She went to the pageant, and she won.
``Then she went to Miss USA, and she did pretty good there, but she didn't win.''
Unfortunately for Roundtree, his sister's bonds with other fellow beauty contestants has not landed him any dream dates.
It is certainly not from a lack of trying.
''I ask her all the time,'' he said. 'She says, `Oh, they're too old for you.' I try to pull the 'age ain't nothing but a number,' but it don't get through to it.''
A successful woman is nothing new to Roundtree's family.
His mother played basketball for the University of Miami under her maiden name of Gailyn Blount.
''It's different,'' Roundtree said of his mother's athletic history.
''A lot of my friends had dads that played sports,'' he said. ``But my mom has always played sports since she was young. She played just about every sport. The only difference is it's a girl and a guy.
``She knows all about football, baseball, basketball -- any sport, just like I do.''
SHOWING SUPPORT
FOR WEST BROWARD
West Broward's debut last week against Cooper City was met with rabid fan support.
Supporters of the first-year school packed the bleachers at Cooper City High.
Although they were not treated to a victory -- a task that might need to wait until 2009 -- the fans witnessed history and the school's first touchdown.
