UNLIKE other national beauty pageants that bag immense corporate sponsorship, the one year-old initiative, the Mrs. Namibia Beauty Pageant, is struggling to stay afloat due to flailing donations and sponsorship.
UNLIKE other national beauty pageants that bag immense corporate sponsorship, the one year-old initiative, the Mrs. Namibia Beauty Pageant, is struggling to stay afloat due to flailing donations and sponsorship.
Since the first pageant was held on 15 December 2007, its coffers have run dry, hurling the event into the gallows of debt. Founder of Mrs. Namibia and National Director, Arminda Jankowski says however, that ‘a Good Samaritan’ has recently settled all outstanding debts and she is pleased to announce that the pageant is back, in full swing.
Jankowski is urging donors and individuals to continue oiling the engine of this wonderful annual event so that it may host its second show this year and hopefully many more in successive years. She would like to see the pageant celebrated on the same level as others, like Miss Namibia.
She says that the initiative needs strong board members and organisers of viable reputation to inject and demonstrate leadership and the organisational skills necessary to propel Mrs. Namibia into greater recognition.
Jankowski blames ‘other upcoming organisations’ for donors shying away from organisations like hers.
“They come up with proposals ...begging for funding, at the end of the day, they fail to deliver. Now we are affected by other people who can’t deliver,” she says.
Jankowski, a married woman and born again Christian, believes that Mrs. Namibia is a great initiative for married women. She says she cooked up with the idea while watching Mrs. Texas (USA) and thought, “Why can’t I start something like this in Namibia? I wanted to prove to people that this idea can work here and I believe it will work.”
She continues to burn with optimism that her initiative has what it takes to break the ceiling of race and borders.
“You never know. We might send our winning married women to Miss World, Miss Universe and other international pageants.”
