A Tulsa native and recent graduate of Union High School, the new Miss Okmulgee 2004, Rachael Poling, is an enchanting and charming young woman.
Just 18, Rachael will be attending Oral Roberts University, majoring in Music with a planned minor in Telecommunications.
Rachael has competed in five other state pageants before entering the Miss Okmulgee contest.
"I competed in five pageants last year," stated Rachael. "I placed fourth runner-up in the Miss Lake Hudson pageant."
Rachael said she took a break from pageant competition, worked really hard on the presentation of her song and changed her platform issue.
Asked if she had any idea she would place in the top four, Rachael replied, "I really hoped I would place, I was really trying my best."
"I took the competitions last year very seriously," she said. "This year I just wanted to have fun. After our interviews on Saturday, I drove around Okmulgee, just looking at the town. I got my hair washed at the beauty school, just to relax. This is a really great city!"
Rachael plans on being in Okmulgee as much as her school schedule will allow, bringing her platform, "Fire Safety Education", to area schools, not only in Okmulgee, but schools in the entire county. She also hopes to have the opportunity to speak to Okmulgee civic groups during her reign.
Rachael is the only child of Michael and Joan Poling. A voracious reader, she has read everything from the Harry Potter books to Christian Romance novels and everything in between.
Rachael also loves to bake, desserts are her specialty!
Rachael attends Woodlake Assembly of God Church in Tulsa. She is part of a youth group that won state honors with a skit they performed in competition. The group is headed for Washington D.C. next week to compete at the national competition.
Another reason Rachael has a big interest in Okmulgee is her boyfriend, John Pippin, attends OSU-Okmulgee School of Construction.
"He won a really big scholarship to OSU-Okmulgee in the Construction School," said Rachael.
Rachael really enjoyed her stay at the Multi-cultural Heritage Program on Tuesday afternoon.
"These kids are better dancers than I am!", she laughed.
The students really seemed to enjoy having the new Miss Okmulgee visit, all saying she is "pretty and sweet"!
"I am very excited about being the 2004 Miss Okmulgee and I hope to help out with my Fire Safety Education platform. I think Okmulgee is a wonderful town to be a 'Miss'," said Rachael. "I'm looking forward to the entire year!"
